We use the highest quality muscle and organ meats - the same meat found at your finest natural food stores. All of our muscle and organ meats are ground partially frozen at the time of processing to ensure only the freshest quality.
Our varieties of Turkey, Chicken and Lamb use muscle and organ meats all from the same species. We don't mix lamb and fish with beef and chicken, so there is better flavor for your feline carnivore. Simple is better.

Our Bone Meal vs Ground in Bone. We only use the highest quality human-grade bone meal in our foods. This is the same product you would buy in a bottle off your local health food store shelf - not the brownish green fertilizer grade product sold for animals. We receive a complete certificate of analysis from our supplier with every shipment. Here are a couple of reasons why we made the choice to use a high quality completely human-grade bone meal over ground in bone:
#1) Many people and veterinarians have serious concerns about feeding raw ground bones. Ground bone is challenging for a cat's digestive system. We agree that this is good, but cats with sluggish digestive systems might have problems digesting bone shards. You are a better judge as to the value of bones in your cat's diet. That is why we recommend feeding bones in the natural condition a cat might find it - whole and chewable! You are at the mercy of the manufacturers on the size of bone shards in their grind. In a typical 'kill' for your backyard carnivore, he or she would most likely consume far less bone than is in a typical serving of food with bone ground in.

#2) It is difficult to guarantee the ratio of bone to meat unless every bone ground is exactly the same size. We have chosen to use a human-grade bone meal powder so that we can closely regulate the calcium and phosphorus content in our diets, which is so important for cats.

                  More about our products . . .
Although feeding a raw diet may seem more expensive than a conventional kibble or canned diet, the benefits far outweigh the cost in terms of the health and happiness of your cat. Here are a few reasons why our raw diets are so special:

Rad Cat is made from the finest human quality meat and organic ingredients.
We believe that our cats and yours deserve to be fed food that is antibiotic and hormone free. That is why all of our meats come from free-range farms.

We use whole meats - the thigh and leg meat for our turkey and chicken varieties, and whole boneless shoulder and trim for our lamb variety. We purchase the whole hearts and livers, and grind them all partially frozen just at the moment of processing. This accomplishes two things: First, we know that all our muscle meat is always the rich, dark, flavorful meat that makes our food taste so good. Second, grinding at the time of processing ensures that Rad Cat will stay fresh and wholesome in your refrigerator as you serve it. When meat is ground, more surface area is exposed to air and accelerates bacteria growth. In our processing, the whole meat goes from the freezer to processing and back in the freezer as finished product in the shortest time possible. Your cat will eat the freshest product available.

In addition to high quality meats, our added ingredients are completely human-grade and are organic where-ever possible. Rad Cat requires very little supplementation in order for it to meet AAFCO guidelines for all life stages of your cats life. All of the recommended and required nutrients including Taurine are provided by our whole food ingredients. Remember, when you see added vitamins and minerals on your cat food label, it means they were added because the 'food' ingredients were not of high enough quality to provide those nutrients themselves, or they have been destroyed by a high temperature cooking process.

We add no vegetables or grains as fillers.
Rad Cat Raw Diet is mostly meat, staying true to your feline carnivore's evolutionary diet. This tends to add to the cost as cheaper filler ingredients are left out. Cats are obligate carnivores and our foods are formulated to meet their nutritional needs.

Grains are not a natural part of the feline evolutionary diet. Historically, cats were used to guard graineries because they would catch mice, and not eat the grain. Only in the last 50 years, with the development of the commercial pet food industry have grains been added to cat and dog foods. Many of these grains used are waste products from large agricultural production facilities.

Many cats are even allergic to the grains in their commercial cat food. These allergies can often manifest as skin and digestive disorders. Grains are also a source of carbohydrates, which cats require very little of. The optimal feline diet is one that provides high protein and low carbohydrates. Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, designed felines to use protein as their main energy source, rather than carbohydrates. Unfortunately, foods on the market that say they provide 'high energy', typically do so by using a grain source. Carbs are a quick source of energy and are burned away very quickly. They are also the cheap and unhealthy solution to providing a dietary energy source. In fact, one of our own cats was highly allergic to grains, and that was what led us to start this company.

Protein, from a meat source, provides sustained energy and is burned completely and efficiently. Yes, foods containing mostly meat are more expensive, but the longer life expectancy, health benefits and lower vet bills outweigh those costs. High carbs in feline (and canine) diets are also major contributors to obesity in pets. Cats on high protein, low carb diets tend to lose excess pounds and maintain a healthy weight, with increased energy and vitality. Starches in high carbohydrate diets tend to bond to teeth, creating tartar build-up, which leads to gum disease, bad breath, and other health problems that are associated with chronic gingivitis. Cat's dietary needs are very different from humans and from dogs, who are omnivores. Cat's digestive systems are very short and they need to eat foods that are easily digestible. Raw diets are the most digestible for cats due to a the high enzyme content naturally present in raw meat.

Many commercial and holistic cat foods also contain vegetables. The reasons for adding them are varied. From claims that their food represents all the food groups, to individual claims about added fruits and veggies, all tend to boil down to the reasons why humans need them in their diets. Though there are some claims that cats eat vegetables contained in the stomachs of their prey, the amount contained in the stomach of a mouse, small rodent or bird is smaller than a dime, and can be considered negligible. Often, the first organ that cats ingest is the brain, which contains the highest concentration of nutrients. That's why when our mighty hunter (or huntress) leaves a present on our porch, it is usually a carcass with a missing head.

Another argument, is that cats will eat grass, therefore, they need vegetables in their diet. In fact, cats ingest grass to help cleanse their digestive tract, mostly to help pass hairballs. Upon regurgitation or elimination through the bowel, the grass will pass completely undigested and whole. Here is why: In order to extract nutrients from vegetables, carnivores and omnivores need to break down the cell walls in some way. Cooking (steaming is best), grinding, and powdering are the best methods of breaking down the cellulose walls in vegetable matter. For humans and some other animals, our chewing process is very effective in that our jaws allow us to "grind". Cats, however, do not 'chew' and grind as we do and therefore, need 'pre-digested' vegatables in order to process the nutrients they contain.

The high moisture content in raw diets also benefits the digestive process. Cats have been designed by Mother Nature to extract the water they need from their food - not from a water dish. Cats eating a raw diet will typically drink less water from the dish than those eating canned and far less than cats eating dry food. While canned foods contain considerably more moisture than dry "kibble" diets, the intracellular moisture (moisture present inside cellular membranes) present in raw foods is the best. This moisture is destroyed during the cooking process of canned and dry foods.

At Rad Cat, we believe simple is better and have produced largely hypoallergenic products that eliminate grains, fruits and vegetables entirely. Many cats also do not like the taste of fruits and vegetables which can lead to palatability issues with food. Rad Cat is a complete diet without added fruits and veggies. As one of our favorite vets says, 'if your cat loves steamed kale, you can add it to Rad Cat. But cats who don't like vegetables will still have a completely nutritious meal'.
